La Dra. Ana Carolina Ruiz Fernández nació en Minatitlán, Ver. Obtuvo el grado de Química Farmacéutica Bióloga por la Facultad de Estudios Superiores Cuautitlán de la UNAM en 992, y los de Maestra en Ciencias y de Doctora en Ciencias del Mar y Limnología por la UNAM en 995 y 999, respectivamente y realizó una estancia postdoctoral en la Universidad de Quebec en Montreal de 999 al 2 . Durante su formación de posgrado, fue becaria del CONACYT, de la DGAPA-UNAM, de la Organización Internacional de Energía Atómica y de la Organización de Estados Americanos. Recibió la medalla Gabino Barreda al mérito universitario por sus estudios de maestría y la medalla Alfonso Caso al mérito académico por sus estudios doctorales. Es miembro del personal académico de la Unidad Académica Mazatlán del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología desde 998, y ostenta el nombramiento de Investigadora Titular C de tiempo completo desde 2 6. Es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (nivel III) y forma parte del Grupo de Geoquímica Marina y Ambiental del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología. En 2 recibió el reconocimiento Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz de la UNAM por su labor destacada como investigadora. Su línea principal de investigación, la Geoquímica Isotópica y Geocronología, tiene como objetivo principal la reconstrucción retrospectiva de las manifestaciones del Cambio Global (e.g. contaminación, cambio de uso del suelo, proliferación de florecimientos algales nocivos, cambio de nivel del mar, entre otras) a través de la aplicación de técnicas nucleares al estudio de registros ambientales. La aportación más importante de su línea de investigación ha sido la introducción de la dimensión temporal (fechado de sedimentos recientes con 2 Pb) y de procedencia de los sedimentos (mediante isótopos estables de C y N, y señales geoquímicas) en el estudio de los impactos antropogénicos en sistemas acuáticos (lacustres, marinos y costeros) en Sinaloa y diversos puntos de Latinoamérica. Ha publicado 2 artículos científicos en revistas indizadas de circulación internacional, 27 capítulos de libro y artículos de divulgación científica y ha participado en más de contribuciones en congresos desarrollados tanto en México como en el extranjero. Ha recibido un total de 2 5 citas y su índice h es de 27 (Scopus, noviembre 2 9). Es editora asociada de la prestigiada revista Journal of Paleolimnology. Es tutora del Posgrado en Ciencias del Mar y Limnología de la UNAM, donde ha impartido diversos cursos ininterrumpidamente desde 998, incluyendo las asignaturas de Química Acuática, Contaminación Acuática y el Seminario Intensivo de Herramientas Isotópicas y Micropalentológicas para el estudio del Cambio Global. Ha dirigido un total de tesis ( tesis de licenciatura, 4 de maestría y 6 de doctorado). Es fundadora y responsable del Laboratorio de Geoquímica Isotópica y Geocronología y del Servicio Académico de Fechado de Sedimentos del ICML, que brinda servicio a instituciones académicas en México y el extranjero en técnicas geoquímicas y radiométricas y además permite la formación de personal de alto nivel en técnicas de vanguardia para el estudio de muestras ambientales. Su trayectoria internacional incluye su participación como miembro del Grupo de Expertos en Aspectos Científicos de la Protección Ambiental Marina (GESAMP) de la Organización de Naciones Unidas y líder de su Grupo de Trabajo 9 Tendencias globales de la contaminación en ecosistemas costeros es investigadora asociada del Centro GEOTOP de la Universidad de Quebec en Montreal y forma parte de la cartera de expertos en técnicas nucleares del Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica, lo cual le ha permitido contribuir a la formación de recursos humanos en técnicas nucleares orientadas al manejo costero en Latinoamérica.
